The EIB invests in a wide range of projects in sub-Saharan Africa, projects designed to improve lives, create opportunities for people and for businesses and support sustainable economic development, in line with the European New Consensus for Development and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.<br \/>The EIB\u2019s Intermediated Loans Programme forms a key part of EIB\u2019s activity in sub-Saharan Africa. As part of the programme, the EIB makes loans to local banks and other intermediaries which subsequently \u201con-lend\u201d to the final beneficiaries.<br \/>Trust Merchant Bank (TMB) has agreed a facility under the Intermediated Loans Programme with the EIB. The agreement sees the EIB providing funds to TMB that the Bank uses to on-lend to our clients in Congo.<br \/><em>Why has TMB decided to participate in the programme?<\/em><br \/>Banks raise funds to subsequently lend to customers in a number of ways. In the case of TMB, the Bank has traditionally raised funds through its deposit base \u2013 i.e. customer deposits are used to provide loans to borrowers. TMB has decided to diversify its funding mix through participation in the EIB Intermediated Loans Programme so that it can provide longer tenor loan facilities to certain SME borrowers.<br \/><em>Will borrowers have to enter into a loan agreement with the EIB?<\/em><br \/>Nothing changes for TMB clients. Loan contracts continue to be with TMB alone, and all borrowed amounts must be repaid to TMB as per usual.<br \/><em>Who is eligible to apply for a loan under the programme?<\/em><br \/>Private sector enterprises defined as entities engaged in an economic activity, irrespective of their legal form, thus encompassing family firms, partnerships, liberal professionals, and associations regularly engaged in economic activity with less than 3,000 full-time employees on a group consolidated basis are eligible for loans under the programme.
